What will a telecom operator look like in 10 years? What services will give them the most revenue? Until the end of the last decade, nearly 80% of the revenue of most operators was from voice traffic. The disruptive business model of Internet based service providers such as Skype, Google and Microsoft has led to a rapid deterioration in this stream of revenue.  This situation is confounded by the increase in the traffic as the users switch to more data centric applications associated with triple play.

 

Many service providers are undergoing transformation to become Integrated Service Providers to meet the challenges posed by the evolving needs of the customers and the disruptive Internet based service providers.  The transformation allows traditional network provider to deliver a broad, integrated portfolio of services to consumers. The converged services include mainstream voice, data, and wireless as well as on-demand content from the music, multimedia television, and healthcare industries.  WiMAX failed to create the promise despite the hype it generated. A number of greenfield WiMAX operators have chosen an all-IP architecture, pioneering convergence and influencing overall market dynamics but are struggling to make ends meet.

 

Several telecom analysts predict that by the end of 2012 there would be about 60 to 80 Million triple play customers world wide.  In contrast, nearly 4 Billion of the world population are in need of and would be happy if they are offered reliable plain old voice technology. Nearly 50% of the world population have never received or made a phone call.  

 

USA and European telecom equipment vendors offering equipment to the Integrated Service Providers face a dilemma since the legacy equipment needed for the rest of the world are being phased out or are in an end of life stage.  Chinese telecom vendors clearly understand this and are busy capturing this legacy market using equipment that require no further R&D costs. Today’s voice customer is the triple play customer of the future - within 5 to 10 years.
